Lanfax Labs in association with Choice tested 49 powder  detergent concentrates in early 2007, resulting in "Wash Only" data for 35 powders in front loaders and 35 powders in top loaders.  The report was published in "Choice" in the April edition.  The data below extend to dual testing of products where one brand was suitable for both front and top loader. These data are presented independently of "Choice".

Sulphur is present in laundry detergents as sodium sulphate and minor other compounds.  Sodium sulphate is often used as a "manufacturing agent" (filler) with larger quantities used in standard laundry powders than concentrates.

Sulphur degrades in anaerobic (without air) systems to produce hydrogen sulphide (rotten-egg gas) which may be the cause of odour around wastewater systems, such as septic tanks and sewer outlets.  This gas is then oxidised and dissolves in water to form sulphuric acid that may have detrimental effects upon plumbing fitting and equipment in aerated wastewater treatment systems.

Whether sulphur products are required or nor is not the purpose of displaying these data.  Simply showing that some products are high in sulphur may correlate with the type of product.

The spelling of "sulphur" as "sulfur" is now acceptable but the former will be used throughout this website.
