The following article has been copied from April 2010 edition of Engineering Newcastle. NORTHERN GROUP TECHNICAL TOUR The Engineers Australia Newcastle Division Northern Group, together with the University of New England Engineering Society, recently held a technical tour to the North Coast. Twenty five engineering students and professionals were fortunate enough to attend the event. The tour kicked off with an interesting tour of the Country Energy Nymboida Hydropower Station with participants delving into the historical, engineering, social and environment impacts of the site. Next it was off to the Ballina Bypass. The Ballina Bypass Alliance was very hospitable and provided a fascinating insight into the many aspects of the site and challenges faced due to construction of pavements, bridges and floodways on tidal areas. Friday night saw the group enjoying burgers and beverages in the balmy Ballina weather. Steve Posselt kindly agreed to give a presentation about his Kayak4Earth expeditions up and down many of Australia's rivers. This proved to be very thought provoking and encouraged many participants to consider our use of available water resources and considerable effects of such use. Saturday morning found the group heading down to Grafton where Greg Mashiah generously took time out of his weekend to show the group around the Grafton Sewage Treatment Plant and the recent and future augmentations. Then it was off to Shannon Creek Dam where participants were able to learn about the dam's role in supplying water to Clarence Valley and Coff's Coast, as well as gaining an understanding of the planning processes and features of the dam aimed to reduce the environmental impact of the storage. Overall the tour proved to be very enjoyable and the Northern Group members and the UNE Engineering Society are looking forward to the next joint tour. The Northern Group and the UNE Engineering Society would like to thank Bruce and Peter (Country Energy), the team at the Ballina Bypass Alliance, Steve Posselt (Kayak4Earth) and Greg Mashiah (Clarence Valley Council) who took the time to show the group their sites and discuss their activities. Graham Chase, Northern Group Ballina Field Trip Friday 26th to Saturday 27th February 2010
